Along the way, you can dress up in traditional clothes, try out archery and hear songs sung by Bhutanese women as they build houses out of rammed earth. It’s touristy, but a good family experience.

The Phobjikha valley gives an experience to some of the local games such as soksum (a light wooden javelin), pungdo (shot put), khuru (wooden dart) and degor (flinging stones to target point similar to horsehoe throwing), jidum (propelling short wooden sticks sharpened at both ends) and archery with traditional bows and arrows.

The Bumthang Bushman Trail is now open as a biking and hiking trail, offering a pleasant and easy walk. The hike begins at the Kharchu Dratshang junction, following a farm road for about 30 minutes through pasture land. From there, the path leads through a pine forest to the top of a hill, where you can enjoy a lovely view of Chamkhar Valley. At the hilltop, there’s an open path with a beautiful meadow, perfect for a snack break.

After resting, continue walking through the pine forest. Near the end of the trail, you’ll see the construction of Zangdopelri (the Paradise of Ugyen Guru Rimpoche) at Dungmithang, and you’ll also catch a view of Pemacholling Nunnery. The hike finishes at the Bebzur Chukpoi Mei (House of the novelty of Bebzur), which has been turned into a museum. You can enjoy a traditional Bumthap lunch at the museum. Alternatively, bring a picnic and eat at Pemacholling Nunnery, just a 10-minute walk from the museum.

After lunch, you can continue along the farm road to Mebartsho (The Burning Lake). Otherwise, your car will meet you at the end of the trail to take you to the museum, Pemacholling Nunnery, and Mebartsho before returning to your lodge.

Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungtang Dechen Phodrang Dzong, is a majestic fortress monastery located at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers in Punakha, Bhutan. Built in the 17th century, it served as the administrative and religious center of the region. Renowned for its grandeur and architectural splendor, Punakha Dzong boasts intricate woodwork, beautiful murals, and serene courtyards. It holds historical significance and continues to be an active religious center and administrative headquarters in Bhutan.

At 160m long, this bridge northeast of Punakha Dzong is one of Bhutan’s longest suspension bridges and it’s fun to cross the swaying, prayer-flag-draped walkway over the Pho Chhu. The drive here from the dzong takes you past a royal palace and a cremation ground.
